An Australian by birth, Maurice Lowe graduated from the National Art School, Sydney and, after additional study in the U.K., became an assistant to Henry Moore. In the U.S., he received his MFA degree from Yale University.

His sculpture is inspired by nature, mythology, travel in Asia, and his reaction to events which impact our own times, i.e. the A-bomb, the Kennedy assassinations, our lunar landing, the vulnerability of our planet, and the destruction of the Twin Towers. In giving form to events which have affected us deeply, he creates sculptures that become 3-dimensional icons.

Lowe transforms his visual experiences, i.e.: moonlight on water, mirage and boat images through his use of selected materials, shape and light. The results are sculptural metaphors.

The writer Mike Mallowe has said of him as a sculptor, “In those reflective and private times of soul-searching and exorcism, when there is just the isolation of artist and material, Maurice Lowe confronts his Zen tiger. In that battle, he has never compromised his clear vision that art must elevate and dignify mankind and his environs.”
